Village Fete #2
27th and 28th July 2001

The second Village Fete was held on a blisteringly hot weekend. Stalls – some by the same designers who participated in last year’s fete, some new to the event – were more ingenious than ever, including Martin Gamper and Rainer Spehl’s "Furniture while you wait", which had the two designers busily making your choice of furniture out of odd bits of wood, found objects, and dismantled second hand furniture (Ron Arad made a guest appearance, making a lovely, erm, coffee table), FAT’s Konran shop (ham-fisted clay reproductions of design classics), Urban Crazy Golf by Fibre, Hyperkit’s Treasure Island, Precious McBane’s candy floss and knickers, Bump’s clairvoyant and palm reading tent, and Lifeform’s giant Spirograph. Best in Show, judged by Ron Arad was won by Arash Kaynama and Kelly Sant’s "Squeal Piggie Squeal". Michael Marriott did the honours once again as Barry the DJ. Stephen Bayley judged most witty stall – won by "Furniture while you wait". The children’s fancy dress, judged by Tom Dixon, was won by an Arne Jacobsen mixer tap. A triangular t-bag was runner up, and Hello Kitty came in a close third. Scarlet Project’s own Tombola included prizes donated by all the designers, a limited edition pink Verner Panton chair donated by Vitra, a mini Jacobsen chair from Fritz Hansen, books from Laurence King, Booth-Clibborn and August Media, and bottles of gin from Bombay Sapphire. Visitor numbers broke all V&A records for a Friday Late View, with 3303 coming on Friday night, and 2475 on the Saturday afternoon. The second Village Fete was sponsored by The Audi Foundation. Graphics for the event, including poster and programme, were by Jon Hares and Nicolas Barba.
