| Facelift for Clerkenwell Eleven contract furniture companies in the Clerkenwell area hosted an exhibition, 'Facelift For Clerkenwell', in their showrooms to celebrate the London Architecture Biennale. Scarlet Projects asked members of Clerkenwell's creative community - architects, designers, craftspeople, writers, advertising agencies, artists and makers et al - to come up with suggestions of ways in which we could improve and transform our local environment. Many answers and ideas were returned using Multistorey's specially and beautifully designed boards which were then fitted together and displayed in the showrooms: Bene, Beyon, Fritz Hansen, Girsberger, Interface, Knoll, Milliken Carpet, Orangebox, Sedus, Vitra, Workstation. Hugh Pearman (The Sunday Times architecture critic) selected the best five entries, each of which won a fabulous designer chair. Ideas ranged from hills to roll down; periscopes on the tops of tall buildings to distribute views to unearthing Wren's 'New Canal', the Fleet River and creating exciting public spaces within the Victorian subterrain under Clerkenwell. Lots of entries were keen to have more trees, flowers and green space around Clerkenwell and many would like to construct a grass roof over the train tracks that run parallel to Farringdon Road, reclaiming the area for a new park. The first London Architecture Biennale was held in Clerkenwell, London as part of Architecture Week 19-28 June 2004. LAB aims to celebrate London's vibrant architectural scene and Clerkenwell as a creative base. Sarah Gaventa of Scarlet Projects is a committee member for London Architecture Biennale. Scarlet Projects conceived and developed three projects for LAB's celebrations
