Domus Design Factory with Tom Dixon
Milan Salone del Mobile
5-8 April 2001
Client: Domus magazine

The Domus Design Factory brought Tom Dixon’s plastic extrusion extravaganza – his installation for the Perrier Jouet Selfridges Design Prize which was seen in Selfridges window – to the Milan Furniture Fair. Scarlet Projects suggested using Tom’s installation as the basis for Domus’s exhibition and worked with Domus and Tom Dixon to recreate the installation in the baroque surroundings of the San Paolo Converso, a deconsecrated church in the centre of Milan. Throughout the duration of the exhibition Tom and other guest designers manned the machine, producing extraordinary feats of plastics imagineering. Their wares were then put on display for all to see. Designers taking part included Michele de Lucchi, Matteo Thun, Ron Arad, Ross Lovegrove, Karim Rashid, Konstantin Grcic and the Azumis. This was design as live performance, and offered an instant snapshot of what a wide range of the world’s greatest designers were thinking about this year. The exhibition was designed by John Pawson with lighting by Isometrix.
